The more I travel and get to know chic women entrepreneurs around the globe,
the more I see how much we have in common. That’s why it’s so important to
open up and share our experiences. Whether

How do you build a profitable business based on your purpose and passion without giving in to stress, late hours, or relationship neglect?

Hi Gretchen!
That is such an excellent question. You’ve described an easy recipe for burnout, something even the most successful women entrepreneurs wrestle with. The pressure to be a workaholic doesn’t go away without a conscious decision to be in your power. It’s all about having the right mindset and the right focus, and making yourself a priority. Here are five practices I live by for major growth, without burning myself out.

Beauty Rest Equals Success
I love my sleep, and refuse to push myself to be at my best when my energy is dragging. I can honestly say I have not worked one day in the last 10 years sleep deprived. Most days I wake up naturally without any alarm. I’ve adopted roughly a 10pm-6am sleep schedule, so I’m always well-rested and productive.
Take a Stand for the And
Most of us have been taught that life is a matter of either / or. I live by and. To have a successful business and a thriving personal life, you just have to ask the right questions, such as: “How can I fill my programs, and end work by 6:30pm to have time for date night?” Or, “How can I market my business in a joyful way that I love, and shut off my computer by 7pm at the latest?” Be clear about your desires, and you’ll always find a way.
A Mentor Is A Must
I’ve absolutely never been without a coach or mentor of some kind. Even when funds were tight, I made having the support and advice of a mentor a non-negotiable. I know that I’ve been able to take big leaps and shorten my learning curve thanks to the guidance of some of the world’s best mentors.
Be a Delegation Diva
Most of us entrepreneurs begin as solo-preneurs, so we get used to doing everything ourselves. It’s great to be independent and have a strong work-ethic when you’re first launching a business, but it’s not sustainable long-term. I used to have a sticky note on my computer that said “Who else can do this?”, reminding me to always stay in my zone of genius. I no longer need a reminder, as today my philosophy is “delegate as much as you can as fast as you can.”
Keep a Money Mindset
In the day-to-day of running a business, there are a bazzzilion things we can do to keep busy. As you prioritize your schedule, remember that not all business activities generate wealth. Part of how I was able to grow my business so quickly is because I focused exclusively on money-making activities—meaning tasks that attracted paying clients. Keeping a money mindset is especially important when you’re starting out and your team is small.
