Mix and Match: How to Create Your Own Beachy Style With
Chic Local Finds and a Few Travel Essentials
You’ve probably been there before, shopping for hours or days, searching for that specific top you need to match your favorite new skirt, only to find that it simply doesn’t exist—sound familiar? Well if I’ve learned anything in my years of working as a stylist and personal shopper, it’s this:
They’re the special pieces you stumble across when you aren’t even looking, and this is when you know the Shopping Gods are smiling down on you and it’s totally a must-have purchase.
If you’re globetrotting like Gina, chances are you’ve collected a few one-of-a-kind travel finds that no one else will have. In fact, Ms. DeVee has a knack for finding some pretty outstanding stuff when Glenn turns his back for a moment or two.
Shopping on the go is one of my favorite things to do, especially after a couple of glasses of wine at lunch, overlooking a cliff somewhere in Europe. Not only does this make for an eclectic and original wardrobe everyone will covet, but it allows you to get creative with your basics during your trip. Which brings us to our Outfit of the Week.
Gina pulled this outfit together on the fly with some super basic items she had already packed for her trip to Sydney. She mixed them with this colorful travel find from our “Local Legend” CAMILLA, et voila! Beachside style on the go.
Getting Gina’s look is all about building on a simple foundation, which means you don’t have to be a stylist or fashion expert to pull it off. It starts with a couple of items you probably already own—or should: An essential black tank and a clean black legging.
The all black underpinnings help to create a long slim line, laying the groundwork for this statement-making layering piece. Gina framed her foundation with a flowing Kaftan in a bold, colorful print. This banded sheer CAMILLA cover-up allows Gina to personalize her look by showing as much, or as little, of the under layer as she likes. Plus the flutter sleeve adds a feminine touch and some extra coverage at the arm.
Thin strappy Jimmy Choo sandals kick things up a notch and create a dressier vibe for dinner and cocktails. And a chunky stone bracelet nods to the natural beauty of the beach.
The whole ensemble makes for one casually glamorous resort look that throws back to the stylish stars of the 1930s, who loved to layer a long dramatic dress over a slim pant—which is always chic in my book.
