On our way to Cape Town, Glenn and I asked all the foodies we know to share their must-visit recommendations. La Colombe quickly rose to the top of our list. This award-winning restaurant has been ranked as the best in Africa and number 76 in the world, and after our dinner here we totally understood why.
Perched on the forested slopes of Table Mountain, La Colombe overlooks the breathtaking Constantia wine valley just west of the city. We so enjoyed the drive up to the Silvermist Wine Estate, as the mountainous Cape landscape is truly unlike any other.
Arriving in time for our dinner reservation, we sat down and were immediately provided with a taste of top-quality South African wine. The staff was friendly, attentive and so knowledgable as they walked us through the phenomenal 11-course menu.
Our meal opened with the most perfectly baked sourdough bread served with exquisite compound butter. From there, each dish was a work of art, bursting with colors and textures. We were delighted by the creative presentations, like the garlic and veggies that arrived ceremoniously in heavy orbs, bursting with aromatic smoke.
Every bite of our meal was balanced, yet surprising. The cuisine was French-inspired with an Asian twist, featuring unexpected items like steamed pork buns and apple popsicles on a bed of liquid nitrogen. At one point on our journey, one of the head chefs came out to personally present a dish, which they do at least once for every single table as part of a high-touch experience.
Dinner culminated with spectacular desserts, paired with the valley’s best dessert wine—something Constantia has long been famous for. And for our 11th and final course, we were treated to house-made petit fours and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee. As we lifted the lids on our espresso cups, we were blown away by the irresistible aroma.
After almost three luxurious hours at La Colombe, we were in a blissful state. The meal unfolded at a leisurely pace, inviting us to fully enjoy every nuance of our lovingly prepared meal. Between the gorgeous scenery, the fabulous wines and the world class service, La Colombe definitely deserves a spot on every jetsetter’s bucket list.
