Understanding What Good Fortune
Really Means to Your Success

oes it ever seem like some people are just lucky in business?
Like they just happened to stumble across the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, while you’ve been scrambling to pick up pennies on the forest floor? Or maybe on the other hand, you’ve experienced what it’s like to be the lucky one. Perhaps there’s been a season when all the right opportunities seemed to fall into your lap at exactly the right moment, or people were just signing up for your packages and services, without you having to struggle to make the sale.

In either case, is “luck” really to thank or to blame? Or do we create our own outcomes?

As with most things in life, I believe the answer is not so black and white. After all, there’s hardly ever just one factor that leads to someone’s success. You’ve probably heard the phrase “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity,” and even that is simplifying it. It’s not only about being ready and finding yourself in the right place at the right time. There’s more going on inside of us and all around us, and staying aligned with your own purpose and path requires a higher level of patience and understanding.

lucky-quoteWhen I was first launching my business, I was fully committed and determined to bring in the amount of money I desired. I was studying wealth consciousness, starting my day with passages from Think and Grow Rich and the Science of Getting Rich, reciting my mantras and doing my visualizations. I was practicing everything my mentors and coaches recommended, and it was working—I brought in a quarter of a million dollars in my first year in business and kept growing from there.

Then in 2012, after I had created a significant level of success, the flow of prosperity seemingly came to a halt. Suddenly clients were not signing up and it was challenging for me to wrap my head around why. Nothing major had changed, my brand, messaging and pricing were the same and my marketing was still going out consistently. And at the same time, colleagues of mine in the industry who were at a similar point in their careers were being invited onto Oprah and penning New York Times bestsellers. So there was this temptation to think, why am I the unlucky one? I’m working, I’m hustling, I’m prepared. Where’s my big break? Why am I the only one who’s stuck?

lucky-1I was falling dangerously far into comparison mode, and forgetting that we’re each on our own path. So I started to look deeper into what my journey was all about and what was really going on in my life. For me, what brought a lot of clarity to the situation was learning about eastern spiritual teachings and especially, astrology. Those modalities allowed me to better understand the elements that shaped my path through the world, renewing my faith that everything was unfolding exactly as it should.

I know that these esoteric teachings can be a controversial subject for some. Growing up a born-again Christian myself, I’m much more comfortable talking about the symbolism of the three wise men and the star they followed than discussing the impact of having Mars and Venus in Leo. But I was curious and open enough to take a look, and as I started working with Jenn Racioppi, I began to feel that there were many energetic influences on my life that could support or hinder me in different ways.

I see now that we all flow to different rhythms. I found it relieving to understand that there are times in the year when I’m meant to relax, lay low and be introspective, and other times when it’s my moment to go forward and take risks. There are months where perhaps I’m better off biting my tongue and being mindful of how I’m communicating, and months where I can feel confident to boldly speak my mind. And I now get that if someone else is enjoying a moment of great prosperity while I’m struggling, they are likely being supported by a favorable aspect and have been able to make the most of it.

lucky-2Through working with Jenn and studying my chart, I’ve learned that success isn’t so much about luck as it is about good fortune. We all have times in our lives when we can capitalize on abundant energetic support, and times when we have to work a bit harder to overcome the challenging aspects that are going on—whether that’s global political issues, dynamics in our own chart, or factors in our personal lives that we have to deal with.

That said, I do believe we all have the ability to manifest what we desire no matter what prospects are out there. So these days, I don’t really see anyone as being “lucky” or “unlucky.” Even when the stars aren’t quite aligned, it doesn’t mean you’re not meant for success. Ultimately, your personal
connection with God and your mission in life supersedes all, so there’s no need to get neurotic about what this astrologer said or that psychic suggested. The intuitives and healers and empaths in our lives are here to help us understand what we’re working with, and how we can bring our energy to the table in the most powerful way. Because no matter what the season, we all have the same opportunity to do so.
